Developing a strong thesis early on in the process can help you ace your thesis and save you from much frustration and wasted research efforts. Your thesis statement will change many times throughout the process. It will likely start off very broad and general, and as you learn more, it will get more targeted and specific. This is fine, and this is the way good theses get developed. What’s important is that you’re always thinking about what your thesis is and what arguments and evidence you’ll need to find in order to support it. After you’ve done a bit of research, write down a few ideas of what your thesis statement might be. What point do you think you want to argue? What are some preliminary ideas for how you will do this? What are your main supporting arguments? A good thesis statement is neither simple, nor straightforward. Its main argument is specific enough to be presented and supported in about a hundred pages, but complex enough that the reader will actually need to read those hundred pages to understand it. A good thesis statement is more than your opinion on the topic. It is your position on the topic supported by strong arguments and evidence. Force yourself to develop a preliminary thesis statement early on, well before you complete most of your research. Always come back to it after you read a few sources, reevaluate and rework it.
