		ORGANIZING AND STRUCTURING CHAPTERS by the student editors of CONQUERING YOUR UNDERGRADUATE THESIS, a Students Helping Students� guide The question of how to structure a thesis and how to break it up into chapters is probably one of the most common. It�s unlikely that you�ve had to write something made up of chapters before your thesis, and although it doesn�t seem that difficult, actually finding the right structure for a thesis can be challenging. How a thesis can be broken up into chapters varies by the type of thesis, the topic, and its academic discipline. Even two theses written on the same exact topic in the same discipline can be structured completely differently by their authors and the authors� preferences. We can�t tell you specifically how to structure yours, but we can offer you a few guidelines. Each chapter should encompass a complete idea or argument. For example, if you�re working on an English thesis about a certain writer, perhaps each chapter can discuss a particular period in that writer�s life and how it contributed and influenced the writer�s works. Or maybe you�re writing about two competing theories of economic development in a certain country. You can have a chapter about each of the theories and their backgrounds, and a few chapters that consider important economic events in the country through the two theoretical lenses. You get the point. Each chapter should contain a distinct and complete idea. Another way to think about this is to imagine taking a chapter of your thesis and publishing it as a stand-alone paper or article. Does it present an idea and argue it? Does the reader feel like he or she is reading a completed piece of writing rather than a small piece of something larger? You�ve succeeded halfway in structuring your thesis if each of your chapters presents a clear and complete idea and can stand confidently on its own. �Think about your thesis chapters as a series of related papers.
