MAKE CONTACTS AND KEEP THEM When I was in college, networking was this scary word that I associated with dry business people. “You only have to network if you’re looking for a job,” I thought, and discounted any casual interactions I had with people I met while visiting my dad’s work and working at several part-time jobs and internships. If I didn’t see how they could help me with something then and there, I didn’t make an effort to keep in touch with them. I don’t know what opportunities I missed because I didn’t make the effort to keep the contacts I’d made, but I am sure there are some. My first real lesson in networking came several years after graduation, and lucky for me, it was a matter of an opportunity I didn’t miss. I was working for a start-up and during that time I went with our company’s CEO to make a presentation to a venture capital firm. We wanted money, like every other start-up, and they had some to invest. As I was making my part of the presentation, I said that “our customers are 110 percent behind us.” All of a sudden, one of the men to whom we were presenting sat up in his chair, turned towards me, and with a serious and stern look asked: “Now, how can your customers be more than 100 percent behind you? Isn’t 100 percent the maximum?” There wasn’t a hint of a smile on his face. The only thing I wanted at that moment was for my chair to self-eject and catapult me out of the room. I must have turned completely red, but it was dark for the slide presentation, and no one but my blushing cheeks knew it. I looked over at my CEO, who gave me this “You’re soooo dead” look, tried to catch my breath, and focused on coming up with a response. “The guy must be kidding,” I kept saying to myself, not believing that someone would actually be serious about questioning a cliché we all use all the time. “Well,” I finally said, forcing a smile, “I am an immigrant to this country, and I was told to use clichés to sound like an American, but I see now that that was wrong.” A pause, a heartbeat, and he laughed. Loudly, happily, and soon followed by the rest of the people in the room. “Great answer!” he said, “Let’s keep going.” Phew. As we walked out, I shook his hand and received what I thought was a really enthusiastic shake back. When I got back to my office, I decided to send him an email, saying that it was nice meeting him and that I’m 100 percent ready to send him any follow-up information. He responded, and although we didn’t end up getting any money from his company, we stayed in touch. I’d make an effort to send him an FYI “here’s how we are doing” email, also asking him about business on his end. A year or so later, our start-up went the way of so many others, and folded. With the economy in the gutter I decided to call every single person I knew right away to start the much dreaded process of networking. I called up my 110 percent contact as well, we had a few lunches, and he asked me to come and work at his firm. I did, and he turned out to be a great boss and a great mentor. Moral of the story: YOU NEVER KNOW. Don’t discount any contact you might make and try to keep in touch as often as you can. A short and simple “Hope all is going well, here’s what I am up to” email to your internship coordinator or the guy with whom you had an informational interview is all you need to keep the lines of communication going. Even if you’re not looking for a job now, you might be later, or you might need a reference or just an industry expert.
