I’d follow a freshman flock to a frat party, or on weekday nights, I’d scan the flyers littering the dorms for a freshman icebreaker. I first enjoyed meeting new people at these gatherings, but Trivial Pursuit tournaments gradually lost their luster and the company began to seem as stale as the food. If your school borders a big city, subscribe to Time Out magazine. Foreign language departments and student film societies screen all kinds of movies, from silent Polish art films to blockbusters. Always drop by art exhibits and author readings. If the artists disappoint you, console yourself with the free wine. Pedantic as it sounds, I love the evening lectures Penn offers. They feature specialists in any field you’re interested in and who are often famous and almost always entertaining. This was really brought home to me when I saw Alan Dershowitz debate Alan Keyes at the law school. If you’re imagining two crusty academics bantering in phony British accents, think again!
