I was teetering on the brink between a C+ and a B- in my freshman calculus class so I really went the extra mile studying for the final. I did everything right: I began studying two weeks in advance, approached my professor with my slightest questions, and even got eight hours of sleep the night before! It was an evening exam, so I awoke bright eyed and bushy tailed, studied all day, and showed up to the exam room twenty minutes early. The room was empty and I felt good about arriving before anyone else. But an hour later, the classroom was still empty. I checked the online exam schedule and sure enough, the exam had been at 7:30 am, not 7:30 pm as I had thought. Forget a B-, I thought, I’m failing! I emailed my professor who, as chance would have it, had slept through an alarm and missed an exam when he was a freshman. He gave me an incomplete and rescheduled the exam for after winter break. Although I hated studying over the vacation, I passed the class and learned several important lessons about how to succeed in college. Write everything down! A planner costs less than five bucks at any drug store and can prove invaluable. If you don’t think you need one, you’re probably disorganized to begin with and need one all the more! Also, going to office hours pays off. Even if some seem gruff, professors usually want to help you as much as they can. I could never have passed Calculus without all the extra help during office hours, and I doubt my professor would have been as understanding about my missing the exam if he didn’t already know me as a dedicated student.
