FOUNDING THE U.N.C. BARBEQUE CLUB

Ever since my friends have had cars here at school, we’ve been going to barbecue restaurants to eat. In the Carolinas, barbecue restaurants specialize in a dish simply called “barbecue,” which consists of chopped up pork with a vinegar, tomato, or mustard sauce. The extent of my love of this food is such that I was once embarrassingly late to leave on a retreat because I decided to drive out to a barbecue restaurant. What we liked about these restaurants was the culture, community, and traditions that were unique to each place, as well as the excellent food.
I realized that most of us going on these trips were out of state students or from a few of the very large cities in North Carolina, so we created the club to introduce people to different cultures and communities around the state. The club has been a real success, as we now have approximately 140 members including students, faculty, staff, administrative officials, and others across the East Coast. We are an officially recognized student organization, and we meet about once a month. At the meeting, when we go to a restaurant, we bring along experts to talk to the group about the modern American South. Some of our past speakers have been writers, poets, political analysts, sociologists, and, of course, chefs.
We publicize meetings on our electronic listserv, but most members hear about us through word of mouth. However, we also occasionally man a table at the central area for students on campus, sell t-shirts to promote the club, and maintain a website to keep people informed about events.
