TRY NEW STUFF

by the student editors of FIND YOUR PASSION IN COLLEGE, a Students Helping Students™ guide

Even if you think that you know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life, try a few different things—you never know what might pique your interest. If you don’t like a certain activity, you can always go back to the safety of what you know and love to do. But you might also discover a whole new side of yourself and a whole new direction for your college life and future.

“One of my biggest regrets about college is not having tried enough different activities. This is so much harder to do after graduation when you have to think about things like paying rent and finding a job. But in college I had the chance to do many things without much risk and I didn’t take full advantage of it.”

Don’t shy away from trying things in which you have absolutely no experience. If you’ve never acted but want to give it a try, go and audition. The worst-case scenario is that you won’t get the part. If you have no journalism experience but want to work for the college paper, do it anyway. This is your chance to get experience, and even though some campus organizations might seem extremely professional, you probably won’t need many (if any) credentials to get involved.

There’s no place where it’s easier to take risks and try new things than in college. If you like your new activity, great! If you hate it, you can quit and not commit yourself to anything. Take a chance and you might surprise yourself.
