WE TALK WITH...

Steven Hely - Recent Grad, Harvard University; Writer for “The Late Show with David Letterman” and former President of The Harvard Lampoon, from FIND YOUR PASSION IN COLLEGE, a Students Helping Students™ guide

Why did you join the humor magazine, The Harvard Lampoon?

I joined the Harvard Lampoon because it seemed like far and away the coolest thing at Harvard, a school not particularly famous for being fun. The Lampoon's long history of pranks and parties, whimsical buildings, secretive traditions, and a hilarious magazine all combined to make it seem like something I'd really like to be a part of.

What sort of impact has your time with the Lampoon had on your college experience?

My time at the Lampoon was, in some important ways, my college experience. I joined during the first semester of my freshman year and put a lot of time into it right up until I graduated. I made some great friends, sharpened my focus on comedy writing, and had a wonderful time. Certainly, when I look back at college, my fondest memories will almost all involve the Lampoon.

How did joining the Lampoon help you prepare for achieving your professional goals?

Working on the Lampoon, in addition to being super-fun, was great training for a writing career. Being around dozens of extremely funny, extremely talented writers gave me a chance to develop my instincts, see how the process of developing comedy works, and experiment with comedy ideas and writing styles. This was great preparation for trying to find a job in the tough world of professional comedy writing.
