COLLEGE RADIO
by Dominick Pangello - Senior, Bates College, from FIND YOUR PASSION IN COLLEGE, a Students Helping Students™ guide
Our freshman year, my twin brother and I got a radio show together on the college radio station. With the 2000 elections looming, it became the station's only news and talk program—we called it “The Smokey Room Talk Show.” The show was such a hit that the editor of the college paper asked us to do a point/counter-point style dialogue column on contemporary political issues. So, every week of the school year for the last three years we've done a column and the two-hour radio show, discussing relevant and contentious issues, interviewing prominent guests, including elected officials and activists, and reporting in-depth news coverage of important stories.
It's really been a fantastic opportunity for us to supplement our academic interests and studies. Both of us are interested in politics, theater, and the performing arts, so “The Smokey Room” is an excellent outlet beyond the classroom. Our motto is 'Listen and Be Heard' because we pride ourselves on not only sharing our opinions with others, but also hearing what others have to say—we solicit email responses to our columns and take all callers on the radio program.
“The Smokey Room” has been one of the most worthwhile extracurricular endeavors of our time at college. We certainly hope that others have learned a bit by listening to and reading our thoughts, and, at the same time, we've learned more than we anticipated by studying the issues outside of the classroom and listening to what others have to say about them.
