What Students Say to Parents About...
PAYING FOR COLLEGE
If we need to pay for college ourselves, help us with filling out financial
aid applications and figure out the best student loans. Paying for college
is taking on a huge responsibility and we will definitely need help, even if
it's just moral support.

One thing I have to tell parents: it is a myth that if you don't have a lot of money to send kids to college, then kids should go to a local school because it's "cheaper." For people who qualify for need-based financial aid, it doesn't matter how much a school costs. Whether it costs $3000 or $30000, the student is expected to contribute the same amount (called the EFC: estimated financial contribution). If it is decided that your family can afford to pay $2000 a year, he/she will pay that at any need-blind school. Therefore, students should feel free to look at all schools, regardless of cost.
