What Students Say to Parents About...
FINDING THE RIGHT COLLEGE
Don't try to push one college at us, even if you know it's the best for us, because you're likely to be met up with some resistance, if only because we feel the need to make this decision independently. Of course you have a say (you are paying for it in most cases!), but if you're trying to push in one direction for whatever reason, try to be as subtle as possible. Also, it's best to always give some sort of choice, so if you feel we need guidance, try to find at least two different options for us to choose from. Since this is the first important decision of our lives (or at least it feels that way), we need to feel like we have at least some input.

My parents tried to give me as much room as possible to make my own decisions. They did, however, ask lots of probing questions that helped me set up the criteria that I used to determine whether a particular college was right for me. I'm grateful that they let me navigate the waters on my own, since college is really my own experience, rather than my parents'.

Not everyone has the means to take the classic college trip to go visit 20 schools in 5 days. Thanks to new technologies, though, many schools offer virtual tours on their websites including course offerings, descriptions of housing, academics and the atmosphere of the school. It’s a quick and easy way to "visit" each school to find the right fit.
