WHAT DID YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR DO FOR YOU?
Questions for: Siobhan, Copy editor, Columbia University '99
Q: What was your major in college?
A: I majored in English with a minor in writing.
Q: Why did you choose it as your major?
A: My main interest was writing. I knew I wanted to take creative writing
classes when I got to school and I thought it would be a good idea to major in something that would enhance my writing. I had always been interested in literature, so it seemed like a natural choice.
Q: Were you happy with your choice?
A: I was very happy. I couldn't have imagined majoring in anything else.
Q: What did you end up doing after graduation?
A: My main love is play writing. I made lots of playwright friends at school.
It's really great, because we're all still in touch and have a writing group that meets every three weeks. I feel really fortunate. It's so important to have support -- people to read your work and offer useful feedback -- if you're trying to do anything creative. I earn my living as a copy editor and writer, and my major helped get that work, too.
Q: Did your major help you or hurt you in your search for a job?
A: It definitely helped. Most of the people I've met through work have majors
in either English or Communications.
Q: Did your major give you the skills to succeed at your first job?
A: I didn't need to have a knowledge of literature to do my first job as a copy
editor at a trade magazine. Basically, I needed writing and editing skills, which I learned at school through writing papers.
want and figure everything else out later.
