WHAT DID YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR DO FOR YOU?
Questions for:
Jason, George Washington University '99
Q: What was your major in college?
A: Journalism.
Q: Why did you choose it as your major?
A: I had thought of an English Major but decided against it. I wanted a
major that would allow me to write, but the style of writing I was using in my English classes was not fulfilling to me. A friend was a Journalism major and I decided to look into it.
Q: Were you happy with your choice?
A: Very. I was able to write in a style of my choice. Although my reporting
classes had a more strict style, most classes allowed me to use a bit of
creative writing in my pieces. I was lucky to have excellent professors that allowed me experiment with style. The classes didn't feel like sitting in a classroom. Discussions would take place on current events and there were few textbooks. The piece of text most used in these classes was that day's copy of the Washington Post (I went to school in Washington, DC).
Q: What did you end up doing after graduation?
A: My first job was with a small video production company in DC.
Q: Did your major help you or hurt you in your search for a job?
A: It helped very much, although it may seem odd that it did. I am now
working in Television, as apposed to print media (which was my focus in college). Employers are always looking for people that have the skills to write and express themselves clearly.
Q: Did your major give you the skills to succeed at your first job?
A: The skills I learned in Journalism helped me excel at my first job and have continued to help me in my career. Journalism gives one a keen eye of
analysis. It teaches you to organize thoughts and plan actions. While I did not become a reporter for a newspaper, everday I use the skills I learned in my Journalism classes.
