WHAT DID YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR DO FOR YOU?
Questions for: Eben, University of Wisconsin - Madison '99
Q: What was your major in college?
A: History.
Q: Why did you choose it as your major?
A: I fell in love with a certain subject (medieval history) and the rest, as they say...is a horrible pun.
Q: Were you happy with your choice?
A: Very happy. The writing, research and analytical skills I learned
translated well into the working world and into other academic pursuits.
Q: What did you end up doing after graduation?
A: Running a political campaign and doing media relations for public interest
groups.
Q: Did your major help you or hurt you in your search for a job?
A: It helped, but it was more the focus that was a help. People have plenty of
applicants who study 20th century American lit. or the Vietnam War, but not many who have studied medieval taxation. It was a good discussion point that allowed me a chance to talk about what I studied and what it taught me, which may not have happened had I studied a more popular subject.
Q: Did your major give you the skills to succeed at your first job?
A: The writing, research and analytical skills I learned translated well into the working world.
