WHAT DID YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR DO FOR YOU?

Questions for:
Avi, Managing Editor of NATAVI GUIDES, Wesleyan '99

Q: What was your major in college?

A: English, plain and simple.

Q: Why did you choose it as your major?

A: I've always loved to read and write and discuss readings and writings. As an English major, that's pretty much what you do most of the time, so it worked out very well.

Q: Were you happy with your choice?

A: I was happy with my choice, as I was able to spend most of academic time doing what I really liked to do, but I do regret not having taken a wider variety of courses - econ, philosophy, etc.

Q: What did you end up doing after graduation?

A: I worked for a medium-size book publishing company, Henry Holt.

Q: Did your major help you or hurt you in your search for a job?

A: The mere fact that I was an English major helped get me the job, but the job itself turned out to be educational yet horribly boring. Into my second and third jobs, my writing, analytical, and communication skills - which I like to think were honed as an English major - proved to be very useful. (But I still recommend that you take a wide variety of courses).

Q: Did your major give you the skills to succeed at your first job?

A: Yes, in the writing that I had to do, but nothing can prepare you for the inevitable office gofering that happens with an entry-level job in publishing (not to mention the meager salaries).
