CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE TOPIC Distinguish between topic and thesis Before you dive into thinking about your topic, make sure that you know the difference between a topic and a thesis. A topic is the general subject of your paper, like a historical period, an economic concept, or a piece of literature about which you might write. To give you an idea, here are a few examples of what a topic might be: • For an English paper, a topic might sound something like “Feminism Reflected in 20th Century American Literature.” • For a history paper, “Queen Elizabeth and the Church of England.” • For a sociology paper, “The Development of the African-American Ghetto.” The thesis of your paper is a position you will argue about your topic and one that you will support with evidence from your research. The thesis of the English paper we used as an example above might be something like: • “Hemingway was one of the most feminist writers of all 20th century American authors.” (We don’t actually recommend that you choose this as your thesis, however.) Shop around Even if you have a feeling about what you might want your topic to be, shop around for a bit before setting it in stone. You might find that the topic you’ll enjoy researching the most was not the topic about which you first thought. To get ideas for a topic, flip through the material you’ve covered in the course for which your term paper was assigned. Also, check out the many reference books that suggest paper topics—you can usually find these in your library or local bookstore. Choose a topic that interests you This piece of advice is probably obvious to you, but it’s worth mentioning. For a few months you’ll spend a significant amount of time slaving over your term paper. You might as well choose a topic that interests you and one about which you’ll enjoy reading quite a bit of information. Even though you might not think so now, having the opportunity to research and learn about an interesting topic can be fun and enjoyable. It’s a nice break from regular class work and boring assignments, and you might even learn a thing or two in the process. Find enough research for your topic Once you’ve narrowed down your topic to two or three possibilities, don’t finalize your choice until you’re confident that there are enough resources at your disposal for researching it. Take some time to figure this out at the beginning, rather than getting stuck half way to your paper’s deadline wishing you could start from scratch and choose a new topic. Remember that one of the main things that your term paper is meant to test is your ability to conduct thorough research.
