Whenever possible, get these goals defined in a quantitative, measurable form. Then seek out the benchmarks you’ll need to accomplish these goals. Most positions will have a track record from previous people who held the particular job and some detailed analysis will yield the benchmarks you’ll need. What should be discussed or defined with a supervisor? In keeping focused on goals, be sure your supervisor is aware of your plan to reach the benchmarks you’ve set for yourself. Also be open to his or her advice on a regular basis. It is not to your advantage to have a supervisor who doesn’t say anything about your progress in reaching your goals. No news is not good news. Ask for advice. Be sure you’re on track. How should a person respond to the office culture? Most companies have a tone that you’ll pick up from the first interview you have with the managers. Initially play off of this tone but don’t feel you’ve mastered the company culture simply because you’re getting along well the first few weeks or even months. There is much more to an office culture than meets the eye and it can take a while to fully appreciate flow of a workplace. What should a person not do when settling in? Assume nothing. Instead, ask for clarification and review your plan of action to fulfill the assignment with your supervisor.
