WE TALK WITH... Jeannette, Former College Counselor What should people in college be doing now to better prepare themselves for the workforce? If you want to get a job when you are done with college, one of the key critical things is to get good summer jobs during college. You can take a month and travel, but for the other month and a half you should get a job. What I have found is that students with resumes by the time they graduate college have had two or three jobs, which shows very differently from someone who hasn’t. If you don’t know what you are going to do, go work in the field you’re interested in. Gain experience in the thing that you are considering. Whatever your passion, go for it. And you’re not stuck—it’s only a month. You should really look at what is fun for you. Because what is fun for you is what you enjoy. And what you really enjoy, if you can make that your career, you are going to be a happy person in your work. “Well, it’s fun to drink beer.” How fun? If beer really fascinates the living daylights out of you, check out the beer industry. That’s fine. There are a lot of people that think work is unpleasant and play is fun, and that’s unfortunate. Are there any pitfalls to avoid? Be very attentive when you say: I should do something. If you’re saying, “I should, I should,” it may not be what you’re interested in. Think about “I want.” “I want to what this summer?” Follow your wants, the things that interest you. What other advice would you like to share? The other thing is if you really don’t know what you want to do, do something anyway. It doesn’t matter if you’re not sure, that’s OK. Do something.
