SHOW WHAT YOU’LL BRING
by Cicely Ott -
Sophomore, Middlebury College; from CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLLEGE & GET ACCEPTED!, a Students Helping Students® guide
Despite the fact that many people seem to dread the essay portion of college applications, I have to say that it was my favorite part. By the time you apply to college, there isn't much left to be done about three years’ worth of grades, about how time out of class has been spent, or about what various teachers think of you. The essay part of the application is basically the only thing over which you still have a lot of control and it’s your chance to give the admissions folks an idea of who you really are.
I remember trying to think of something to say that would give readers a window into me, and it was the best feeling to realize that I wasn’t trying to prove anything in my essay. As far as I can tell, there’s little to be done at this point about whether or not you are the right caliber student for a particular institution. But, once a person's grades and other past performances show that he or she is an academically qualified applicant, it's all about the essay. Use your essay to show readers something amazing about you—show your school of choice that you have something special to bring to its community.
