WE TALK WITH...
Patty McKeever -
Recent Grad, Wheaton College; from CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLLEGE & GET ACCEPTED!, a Students Helping Students® guide
In looking at colleges, what appealed to you the most about the college you eventually chose?
It had a strong English major and I liked the professors. It was also good to be close to home and it was a great campus.
If you could do it over again, would you pick the same school?
If I had to do it again I would be less naïve about what it’s like to come out of school as a theater major. My education didn’t come to fruition as I hoped it would. It never taught us that professional edge. I probably would’ve gone to a school like NYU—I think they have a lot more theater students and theater professors.
Why do you think you ended up going to a school that wasn’t quite right for what you wanted?
I don’t think I researched schools as in depth as I should have. This was one of the first schools that I looked at. I looked at Wheaton, Brown, and Wellesley, and I just really liked Wheaton. I think I should’ve done more research and looked at more schools—I got a little over-zealous. I applied early, got accepted, and then couldn’t apply to other places.
Are there any mistakes you think you made in doing college research?
It’s easy to get romanced by the teacher-to-student ratio. There were fifteen students to one professor, but that meant with thirty students in the theater major there were only two professors!
