BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
by Jen Miller -
Recent Grad, University of Tampa; from CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLLEGE & GET ACCEPTED!, a Students Helping Students® guide
When it came time for me to choose a college, I looked far and wide for where I would spend the next four years. All of my friends said they couldn’t wait to move out of their house and start their real lives when they entered college, so I did the same. We turned up our noses at local colleges because we were too mature to be living that close to home. My final decision took me more than 1,000 miles away from the state where I’d lived my whole life.
After a month, I hated my new college. I was so terribly homesick that I almost transferred to the state school that my friends and I had scorned. While they enjoyed the distance, I floundered. I had been swept along in their priorities and forgot to examine my own. In their need to break from their families, I thought I’d need that, too, when in fact I didn’t want to be so far away.
When I begged my parents to let me come home, they were firm that I should finish out the year at my far-away school. Eventually, the homesickness subsided and I learned to enjoy where I was, in part because I joined extracurricular organizations and met friends that became my college family. Transferring would’ve been costly, both money-wise and credit-wise, so sticking it out was the best decision. I still wish, though, that I’d considered the local school. It would’ve saved both my family and me a year of heartache.
