CHOOSING TO STAY LOCAL
by
Laura Gabella
Junior, Orange County Community College
Going to a two-year community college is a lot cheaper than most four-year schools, but many of the experiences are still the same. Making close friends is hard because you’re not with them 24-7 like at a four-year school, but it is possible. New friends can be made through sports and other activities. It may seem like that is just like high school again, but it really isn't. At two-year schools, you go more places with groups and thus spend more time with other students than you would in high school.
I think that if you’re not 100% sure what you want to do with your life that you should save your money and go to a community college. I know about 7 or 8 people who were going to go away and then decided to go to Orange County Community College instead, who said it was the best decision they made. They were still able to meet new friends and also decide what they wanted to do in life pretty cheaply. You can always transfer to a four-year school later.
And don’t worry about running into people from your high school all the time. You see them infrequently unless you purposely have classes together. You can avoid them if you want to!
