But if you can send over a copy of a more generous offer from somewhere else, that's quite a bit harder to ignore. My school decided to award me an additional $10,000 per year after seeing what other schools had committed. This made the time and toil of filling out a few extra applications very well spent! Don't be afraid to lean on your parents. Have them call the school and explain why they don't have money to give you. For example, if your parents sell an investment off which they are going to live, and they thus have an unusually large amount of savings, have them explain the situation to your school. Never let up on the financial aid department. Make phone calls, write letters, and speak with them in person. The more they know your name and your story, the more they will eventually tire of you and find some aid for you. If they tell you their hands are tied, seek higher help. Ask to talk to bosses of bosses. Persistence will pay off, and someone will eventually be able to help you come up with some money. The first offer they come up with may include loans, but try to hold out for the free money. All schools have special scholarship funds hidden away for special circumstances. Talk to the dean of your school—chances are, he or she has additional funds to help you. Above all, try to remain professional. Money can become an emotional subject, especially if you find yourself up against a wall. In your letters, phone conversations, and in personal interviews, remain calm and continually state your troubles.
